Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote has officially unveiled plans for a monumental sugar refinery project in Ghana, a strategic move aimed at significantly reducing the country's dependence on sugar imports while bolstering local agro-industrial capacity. In a recent LinkedIn post, Dangote shared details about the new facility, known as Dangote Sugar Refinery, which will be situated in Kwame-Danso, a region in Bono. He emphasized that this venture is poised to become a key pillar in Ghana's ongoing industrial transformation and economic development.
In his announcement, Dangote expressed excitement, stating, "We're thrilled to announce the launch of a major agro-industrial project in Kwame-Danso, Bono Region: Dangote Sugar Refinery." He described the initiative as "a new chapter" for Ghana, highlighting its potential to stimulate local economies and create jobs. The refinery is aligned with Ghana's ambitious One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, which aims to encourage manufacturing and promote self-sufficiency throughout the country.
The project is expected to have a substantial impact on Ghana's economy, particularly by reducing its annual sugar import bill, which currently stands at approximately US$162 million. Key features of the Dangote Sugar Refinery include an impressive daily sugarcane crushing capacity of 12,000 tons and the installation of irrigation infrastructure covering 25,000 hectares of farmland. Additionally, the facility will incorporate production lines for sugar, molasses, and ethanol.
Dangote also assured stakeholders that all necessary permits have been secured and that land acquisition processes have been finalized, paving the way for the full-scale implementation of the project. "With land secured and necessary permits obtained, we're moving forward with the support of Ghana's One District, One Factory initiative," he stated. "This project tackles Ghana's US$162 million sugar import bill while fostering a sustainable, homegrown solution." The establishment of this refinery not only promises to enhance local sugar production but also positions Ghana to become a competitive player in the regional sugar market.
