Iran Rules Out New Nuclear Talks Until Attacks Stop
Iran has firmly ruled out any new nuclear negotiations with Western powers until ongoing Israeli attacks in the region cease, according to a senior Iranian official. The decision comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with Iran under increasing pressure over its nuclear program and regional activities.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani stated on Thursday that “Iran will not return to the negotiating table under threats and military pressure,” referring specifically to Israeli airstrikes in Syria and Lebanon, as well as cyberattacks targeting Iranian infrastructure. He said Tehran sees these actions as part of a coordinated campaign to weaken Iran and undermine diplomacy.
The 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has been in limbo since the U.S. unilaterally withdrew in 2018. While European powers and the Biden administration have attempted to revive talks, progress has stalled amid mutual accusations and regional instability.
Kanaani said Iran remains committed to peaceful nuclear activities and international obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but he insisted that diplomacy cannot move forward while Iran is “under attack.”
This announcement follows a series of airstrikes attributed to Israel, including one that reportedly killed senior members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria.
Iran has vowed retaliation and warned that continued aggression would trigger a wider regional response.
The United States has condemned Iranian enrichment activities while urging restraint on all sides. However, Washington has not commented directly on Tehran’s latest conditions for negotiations.
Analysts warn that without dialogue, the risk of escalation remains high. "The path to a diplomatic solution is narrowing," said Trita Parsi, a Middle East expert, "and without talks, miscalculation becomes a real danger."
As the situation grows more volatile, prospects for reviving the nuclear deal appear increasingly bleak. Iran’s stance suggests that regional security will now be a precondition for diplomacy.
