Kylian Mbappe Wins the European Golden Boot and the La Liga Pichichi (Top Scorer)
Real Madrid's number 9, Kylian Mbappe, has won the European Golden Boot after scoring 31 La Liga goals. His closest rival for the La Liga Pichichi, Robert Lewandowski, finished with 27 league goals, despite scoring a brace in their last match.
The European Golden Shoe is awarded based on the number of goals scored in domestic leagues, with each goal multiplied by a league coefficient to determine points. Goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues — the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and Serie A — carry a coefficient of 2.0. Goals in mid-tier leagues, like the Portuguese Liga, are multiplied by 1.5, while goals in lower-tier leagues are multiplied by 1.0. These coefficients are based on UEFA’s ranking of league performances over the past five seasons.
Though Viktor Gyökeres scored more league goals than Mbappe — 39 goals in the Portuguese league — his total was multiplied by 1.5, giving him 58.5 points, compared to Mbappe’s 62 points.
Mohamed Salah finished third with 58 points from 29 Premier League goals. (The Premier League also has a coefficient of 2.0.) Lewandowski ranked fourth with 54 points, while Harry Kane came fifth with 52 points from 26 Bundesliga goals.
Personal Thoughts:
Personally, I think Gyökeres deserves praise for being the only player outside Europe’s top five leagues to make the top list. Sometimes I feel the point system is unfair, but on the other hand, it seems fair when you consider that Europe’s top five leagues earned their reputation through consistent success.
Besides Gyökeres, Kylian Mbappe also deserves a shoutout. He had a tough start in his first four months in La Liga, adjusting to a new league and playing as a striker rather than his natural position on the wing. Despite giving everyone a head start, Kylian still managed to surpass them in league goals.
Imagine winning both the league’s top scorer award and the European Golden Shoe in your first season. That’s an outstanding achievement.
