PRESIDENT TRUMP’S MIDDLE EAST RIVIERA DREAM: REWRITING GAZA’S FUTURE

President Trump’s brazen suggestion of converting the Gaza Strip into a Riviera, a kind of coastal paradise, has been widely criticized. The critics include Arab and European leaders, as well as residents of the Gaza Strip. These influential people have failed to bring lasting peace to the Middle East after decades of individual and collective efforts. How much longer can the land of Gaza and the Middle East tolerate the conflict, hatred and blood spilling?

Author Anne Irfan can help any new scholar review the history of the Middle East conflict! From the occupation of Gaza by Israel to the rise of Hamas, her narration is most interestingly crafted. The book, titled"A Short History of the Gaza Strip”, rehearses how the conflict brewed and overflowed its banks. Can you imagine the hostile groups, the hostile governments, the numerous dead and wounded children, and men and women? As a passionate environmentalist, I can imagine decades of sustained destruction of animals, trees, plants, and creatures in the air and water and, finally, on the land.

When will the Middle Eastern people start to think of a plan to compensate their environment for the harm and the losses? Is President Trump's Riviera dream for Gaza the answer to Earth's cry for peace in this region?

A Riviera? Yes! A coastal paradise! Early this year, President Trump voiced his dream for the Middle East. He sees the strip of land along the Mediterranean coastline as an opportunity for enormous wealth through establishing a resort for tourism, a place of luxury, a location of relaxation, leisure and education. The president compares the location to Miami and the South of France. He sees wealth, development, prosperity and peace as against what the world has received from the inhabitants of this geographical location since many decades. President Trump thinks of business! I think environmental! What do you think?

Between the years 1947 and 1949, history recorded a kind of ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Author Ilan Pappe vividly describes this event in his book titled “The ethnic cleansing of Palestine”. The book speaks of a million Palestinians, who included women and children, who were expelled from their habitations amidst massacres in 400 villages. The author blames the ghosts of this horrific event as the reason for the never-ending conflict in the Middle East.

Let’s ask the vengeance-seeking Palestinians! Ask the Israelis, who must avenge their frequently shattered peace! If all the dead ones and the ones that may yet die are to be avenged, will there ever be peace?

Author Ian S. Lustick’s book sounds unsympathetic to the two-state solution. The book titled ‘’Paradigm Lost’’ analyses the “Arab-Israeli conflicts” as never to be ended by any one state or two-state solution. The author is of the opinion that two state solutions activate competition among different subgroups forced to live together. This catalyses the formation of new groups and alliances of newer interests, which oft have no laid down management plan by the governments. On the other hand, author Debra Cohen in the second edition of her book “Jewish Palestine/Arab Palestine” advocates Trump's POTUS 47 RELO Plan. The author lays down numerous convincing facts that this plan should work.

President Trump’s idea while sounding rash, unreasonable and selfish may save the world of much more losses, grief and pain. A coastal resort may save more lives; more resources and, it will save the land of Gaza and give the environment the opportunity to recover and heal itself.   Can you hear the environment crying out alongside the blood of the innocent dead ones? How long will earth’s voice be considered insignificant in the Middle East? There is the need for this region to give back to the environment a bit of what she has lost to conflicts and destruction.

If the land of the Middle East is to have a rest, surely, rethinking and reviewing the possibility of ownership and establishment of a Riviera or Coastal Paradise should be exploited.  May this concept positively motivate great numbers of Palestinians and Israelis. May the threat of a forceful relocation of the residents awaken the sleeping conscience of those that truly love, cherish and value the Gaza Strip to re-unite more purposefully and force peace to come to stay home!
