In a bold response to mounting political pressure, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has firmly dismissed calls for an immediate re-run of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, addressed the controversy on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to transparency and the rule of law.
Tensions have been rising in the Ablekuma North constituency following the announcement of tightly contested results in the December 2024 general elections. Allegations of irregularities surfaced from factions within the opposition party, demanding a fresh poll. However, the EC has maintained that these claims are unsubstantiated.
According to Dr. Asare, all necessary documentation—including pink sheets and polling station results—were duly signed by party agents and verified.
This statement comes amidst increasing demonstrations in parts of the constituency, with protestors calling for electoral justice. The EC, however, urged calm and reaffirmed its role as an independent constitutional body.
Political analysts believe the Commission’s clear stance sends a strong message about upholding electoral integrity in Ghana’s democracy. Dr. Asare also cautioned politicians and their supporters against spreading misinformation.
Meanwhile, civil society groups and election observers, including CODEO, have backed the EC’s statement, indicating that the election process in Ablekuma North was largely peaceful and transparent.
As of now, no official petition has been filed at the High Court to challenge the Ablekuma North results. Legal experts note that any challenge must be initiated within 21 days of the declaration of results, as stipulated in Ghana’s electoral laws.
The EC’s rejection of an immediate re-run has added a new twist to the post-election narrative. All eyes are now on whether the opposition will pursue a legal battle or accept the outcome.
