You don’t often see Barcelona and Real Madrid go after the top talents in Spain and come up empty-handed. But today, Newcastle United managed to pull off a surprising move by signing Antonio Cordero, beating out both of those football powerhouses.
Cordero, a rising star from Malaga, really made a name for himself during the thrilling end of the 2023-24 season. He played a key part in their push to get back to Segunda, and in a nail-biting moment at the end of the play-off final, it was ‘Antonito’ who clinched their return to professional football—all at just 17 years old! With his impressive skills, it didn’t take long for Barcelona and Real Madrid to take notice. The Catalan giants even threw in a late bid that summer to get him on their Barca Atletic team.
Now that he’s 18 and with the well-known super-agent Pini Zahavi representing him, Cordero was in a bit of a tricky spot since he had only a year left on his contract. Malaga turned down the offers from both Barcelona and Real Madrid, hoping to persuade him to stick around and sign a new deal. But those two giants were really pushing to get him on board.
As the new year rolled in, Newcastle started to challenge the Spanish clubs for his signature. And guess what? They managed to convince him to sign a five-year deal up in Tyneside. Newcastle has officially announced the signing of Cordero now.
Over the season, Cordero really found his groove in Segunda, racking up 40 appearances and starting 23 of those matches. He’s quite versatile, playing as a winger on either side, and during that time, he netted six goals and dished out seven assists.
The Magpies have made it clear that Cordero is likely to go out on loan this summer, but the destination is still a mystery. Sporting Director Paul Mitchell, who was instrumental in making this deal happen, shared his excitement about the signing:
“Antonio is an exciting talent. We’re delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe. He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences.”
