Court Grants Wontumi Bail Variation After Application Instructed by Wife, Tampuli
A Kumasi High Court has granted a significant variation to the bail conditions of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This legal adjustment, crucially sought on Wontumi's behalf, was formally instructed by his wife, Patricia Tampuli, who also serves as his legal counsel.
Wontumi is currently facing criminal charges, including assault and threats of death. His initial bail conditions, set by the court, restricted his movements solely to the Ashanti Region. However, the demands of his high-profile political role and reported personal needs necessitated travel outside the region, specifically to the national capital, Accra.
Recognizing this need, Patricia Tampuli, acting both as Wontumi's wife and his lawyer, formally instructed the legal team to file an application for bail variation. The application, presented before Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, argued compellingly that Wontumi required access to Accra for two primary reasons:
1. **Critical Party Business:** As a key NPP regional chairman and a member of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC), Wontumi needed to attend crucial meetings and consultations with the national leadership and President Nana Akufo-Addo in Accra, especially pertinent with upcoming national elections.
2. **Medical Attention:** The application cited the necessity for Wontumi to undergo specific medical examinations and treatments available only at medical facilities located in Accra.
The prosecution, represented by Chief Inspector Kofi Agyei, did not oppose the application after reviewing the grounds presented by Tampuli and the defence team. The court found the reasons for seeking the variation valid and justified.
Consequently, Justice Yanzuh granted the application, varying Wontumi's bail conditions. He is now permitted to travel to Accra specifically for the purposes of attending official NPP meetings and seeking medical care. However, the court imposed strict conditions to ensure accountability: whenever Wontumi travels to Accra under this variation, he must report his arrival and departure to the Cantonments Police Station in Accra, providing his contact address while in the city.
This development highlights the pivotal role played by Patricia Tampuli. By instructing the application, she proactively addressed the practical constraints her husband faced due to his bail restrictions, enabling him to fulfill essential political duties and attend to his health while ensuring continued compliance with the judicial process through the new reporting requirements. The court's approval signifies a necessary adjustment balancing legal obligations with Wontumi's significant responsibilities
