Manchester United are said to have turned down the opportunity to sign Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez last season.

Alvarez arrived at the Etihad on the last day of last summer's transfer window from Argentine giants River Plate in a deal worth around 15m.

The 23-year-old has had to finish second behind Erling Haaland this season, after the Norwegian's phenomenal goalscoring form.

When the opportunity arises, however, he seizes it with confidence, such as in the match against Real Madrid, when he coldly scored Man City's fourth goal.

When he scored City's first goal against Chelsea on Sunday as the Sky Blues celebrated their third consecutive Premier League title. However, Alvarez came close to signing the other half of Manchester last season but then United manager Ralf Rangnick decided to turn down the deal.

And with Erik ten Hag tipped to scour the market for a top striker this summer, Reds fans may regret Rangnick's decision.

Since then, Alvarez has won the Premier League with Manchester City and the World Cup with Argentina. Though he could also have won the FA Cup and Champions League medals before the season ends.

Why did Man Utd reject Alvarez? According to The Express, Manchester United have apparently turned down the chance to sign Alvarez as they are hungry for someone "ready to play at the highest level of the game right away".

Cristiano Ronaldo was United's top choice striker at the time, but the Portuguese superstar was struggling in front of goal at the time.

While Edinson Cavani is unlikely to feature regularly, Rangnick clearly thinks Alvarez will need time to adapt to the Premier League.

Manchester United find themselves in a similar situation again, as Ten Hag wants to add an excellent No 9 to their ranks.

There are rumors that Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane have moved to Old Trafford. However, both players are expected to cost upwards of 100m.

With Alvarez costing Man City a fraction of that price, the club's decision to look elsewhere could be a hard pill to swallow for United fans knowing he may have worn Red T-shirt.
