The Ministry of Nature commemorates theInternational Day of Families 



The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare is celebrating the International Day of Families in Teshie in Accra.

Under the theme "Family
 and new technologies", the event focused on raising awareness of new digital technologies and countermeasures to combattheir impact on family well-being. It also aims to highlightthe importance of embracing existing and emerging technologies to improve the lives of families in Ghana.

In a keynote speech, Sector Minister Lariba Zuweira said that improving the use of new technologies in family life has become an important issue in today's world. The Ministry of Nature commemorates theInternational Day of Families 
According to him, technology has become an important part of people's and family's dailylife and it is designed to fit intotheir daily work schedule and to work efficiently.

However, he
 explained that understanding how to use technology and the role it playsin the family reduces family problems. He said that in addition to providing families with social and economic benefits, new technology also serves as a great means ofcommunication for families to stay in touch.

"Even if
 family members are not physically present, these video calls allow them to participateand celebrate the festival with others," he said. He added that, despite the barriers of distance between family members, technology brings them together and reduces the pressure of travel to be with the family.

Mrs.
 Zuweira who called on parents to control the use of technology, also encouragedfamilies to support their children and guide them in its use to protect them fromtrafficking, kidnapping and other risks related to the use of technology, especially mobile phones, television and. social media. Dr. Afisa Zakaria who is the director of the service center said that the event not only raised the awareness ofthe need to adopt new technology.

A child protection expert at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Ms.Joo Lee said that this topic isvery useful as the Internet provides children and young people with incredible opportunities to communicate, connect, get information, have fun and express themselves. themselves. .

 however, in addition toopportunities, the Internet also brings risks to the safety of children, including child abuse on the Internet, which is on the rise. He explained that in orderto ensure the safety of children online, it is important to have a strong child protection system where social workers, teachers, police, health workers and law enforcement officials can identify cases, to children with problems. through rapid and effective support, including psychological counseling, rehabilitation and legal aid.

Ms Lee called for empoweringchildren to recognize danger,protect themselves, support their peers and seek help when needed. The United Nations established the International Day of Families in 1993 through resolution A/RES/47/237.


Since then, every year on May 15, family awareness is raised.
