WHAT ARE CHILLIES

Okay so we all think we know what chillies are. Small red coloured peppers that are spicy. Well in essence this may be true, however, chillies are so much more than just spicy red peppers. I want to go deeper and help you understand exactly what chilli means and where it comes from.

So how do you spell it? Chilli or chilli. The answer may surprise you as in fact there is no right answer! I know it seems a little strange. However, the word can be spelt either way. Usually it depends which region or part of the world you are from. Folks form the UK and India use "Chill", whereas Americans like to use "Chili" in their spelling. Therefore, i will let you decide which variation you would lie to use in your writing. As for me I tend to prefer the "Chilli" version.

Now that we all can agree on the spelling. Let's explore where chillies come from. This yet again is another question with more than one answer. Most individuals believe that chillies originated in Mexico and date back to 7000BC. However, on the other side of the argument people contend that chillies in fact could not have originated form Mexico as chilli peppers cannot be found in Mexico today (except tourist sites). If you ask me, I believe chillies came from either Peru or Bolivia. Now if you are more interested I will let you explore the origins and beginnings by yourself. However a good place to start would be http://www.chilliesrestaurant.net/. There you will find more information which can lead you to other sites and places for more information and stories.

Okay now that we have a little more understanding, let's talk size. No not that size! Chillies can vary from very small to small. Enough jokes. In short, chilli peppers are generally small and the smaller they are the more spicy they become. Colours such as green, yellow and purple tend to be much milder than red and brown ones. In addition, I wanted to make sure I explained that the spiciest pepper in the world is not the "Ghost Pepper" (Bhut Jolokia). The most extreme death pepper is known as the "Carolina Reaper". Keep an eye out for these bad boys. Make sure you check out "what not to do" to see exactly how spicy these peppers are and what they do to silly people.
