HEALTH BENEFITS OF PUREES

I recently visited my hometown where the weather can change very drastically. I went from 90+ degrees and very sunny on a daily basis to 40 degrees and rainy weather in my hometown. I should have known better from being born and raised in the state, but I was dressed very unprepared from the weather. Needless to say, I got quite sick from the drastic weather change.

Since I haven’t had a sore throat in quite some time, the pain was very bad this time around. My throat would practically close if my mouth started to feel dry and the fever made my overall wellness feel very low. I think I went about 24 hours without eating before I dove into my cupboard to look for applesauce or some sort of soft food. That’s when I came across one leftover pack of the Zucchini Zen MultiGen Purees that a family friend sent to me. I completely forgot about the puree pouches I was sent, but was I happy to have come across it.

I decided to do a little research on the purees to try to find out what all of the rave was about. Here is what I found:

[Research] Purees are a soft food that is made out of whole food, usually fruits and vegetables. They consist of a smooth and creamy texture that makes it easy to swallow. They’re primarily known for being a type of baby food, but many adults and elderly consume pureed food as well. They’re especially recommended for anyone restricted to a soft food diet - whether suffering from a swallowing disorder, such as dysphagia, or have undergone a certain type of surgery. Some common surgeries associated with soft food diets: oral surgery, jaw surgery, gastric bypass, hysterectomy, and bariatric surgery. Many digestive surgeries will also require a soft food diet.

After doing some more research on specific puree brands, I found that the MultiGen Purees are actually one of the best options. For starters, there are no preservatives and no additives. For this day and age, it’s a major plus. It is said that about 80% of United States packaged goods contain harsh chemicals and preservatives. You’d automatically think that purees would be a different circumstance since they consist of fruits and vegetables; however, this is not the case. I found two of the top competitors right of the bat that had preservatives within their packaging. Now why would one company have purees and the other not have any? This is because the MultiGen purees are NOT frozen. This is of huge importance when it comes to packaged goods containing preservatives. A general rule of thumb: if it is frozen, it more than likely contains preservatives.

Another great advantage that I wouldn’t have realized without doing a little research - the MultiGen Purees are alkaline-forming. Alkaline-forming basically means that the food is low-acidic. Highly-acidic foods can actually have a negative effect on the body. A high-acidic diet can lead to bone mineral loss and increase the likelihood of osteoporosis. Alkaline-forming has quite the opposite effect. It is said that an alkaline diet will help balance your body’s pH levels. What does this mean? Well, when the body’s pH levels are at the ideal level, the immune system strengthens and operates a full-throttle. This, in turn, reduces the risk of death for multiple diseases and illnesses. Surprisingly enough, it is said that cancer cannot exist is a overly alkaline diet.

This is why I have been in complete awe of the puree pouches. Not only do they allow those having trouble with swallowing to intake food, but they also consist of insanely good ingredients. I ate the zucchini puree and honestly started to feel better the next day. Since then, I’ve discovered a few ways to intake the soft food with more of the foods I like.

I was speaking to the owner of the company after telling her about my story and she told me that many of her customers actually add the puree to their daily meals. Many of them have children and have difficulty getting them to eat their veggies, so they add one or two pouches to sauces or soups. I figured I would give it a go with my old family spaghetti recipe. I ordered a few pouches of each flavor and first tested the Herby Roots puree. I only added one pouch to the sauce the first time, and couldn’t really even taste the new addition. I added two the next time and to be honest, it made the recipe even more delicious. My boyfriend, who is not a veggie enthusiast, asked what I did differently and told me to make it like that from now on.

Now, we’re intaking double the amount of vegetables that we were before just by simply adding a pouch to meals that they would go well with. I strongly recommend trying the MultiGen Purees. I also strongly recommend doing your research when it comes to the food you’re feeding yourself and your family. While many may advertise “Natural Ingredients,” you still have to beware of harsh chemicals and preservatives used to keep that food fresh.
