Former Manchester United great and footballing icon David Beckham has discussed why he supports the current England squad.
David Beckham remarked on The Overlap that he loves the current England team because of the amount of work they do outside of sport to raise awareness of social issues.
Beckham singled out Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Manchester City's Raheem Sterling as two players he observed making significant advances off the field.
Both Sterling and Rashford have repeatedly utilized their platforms to combat and raise awareness of the racist abuse that they and other black footballers encounter on a regular basis.Rashford, United's current number 10, received an MBE late last year for his tireless efforts to combat child poverty.
Marcus Rashford received an MBE for his services to vulnerable children in the United Kingdom during the coronavirus outbreak.
Beckham commented on Rashford, Sterling, and the rest of the team's tremendous work, saying:
"When I talk about these players, you realize they're more than simply football players." What I admire most about this generation of players, especially in England. Is that, given the authority they have off the field, they're attempting to effect change."
"You know, I see Marcus [Rashford's] work, I see Raheem [Sterling's work,I see the work that other guys in those positions have done. They are performing amazing work outside of the game. It's very outstanding. Because they are using their platform to assist others and effect change."
"Because what happens in their life should never happen." But the fact that they are now, helping others and educating others, into racism, into the stuff that they go through every day, whether it's social media or normal life. They are bringing about change, which is why I admire this set of athletes and this age."
Raheem Sterling has continued to perform fantastic work using his platform to combat racism.
Many of the current England squad members have used their positions of power for good. Recently, Manchester City striker Jack Grealish joined forces with Special Olympics GB, becoming its Principal Ambassador.
Tyrone Mings, Harry Kane, and Jordan Henderson were all prominently involved in the '#PlayersTogether' campaign, in which footballers banded together to raise money for the NHS when COVID-19 swept the world in 2020.
It should also be noted that Beckham is frequently involved in both charity activities and addressing social issues. Projects like; 7 Some of the projects in which Beckham is participating include the David Beckham UNICEF Fund and the Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust.
