Chairman Wontumi Fires Back at Justin Kodua, Calls for Fairness and Truth in NPP Internal Matters
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has strongly responded to remarks made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong. Wontumi insists that his recent comments about the party were misrepresented and urged for greater accuracy, fairness, and respect in internal party communications.
Recently, the NPP’s national leadership, through a statement signed by Mr. Kodua Frimpong, called on the public and stakeholders to disregard public pronouncements made by Chairman Wontumi and the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly called Abronye DC. The party stated that their views did not reflect the official position, principles, or ideals of the New Patriotic Party.
In a sharp rebuttal, Chairman Wontumi argued that the statement unfairly painted him as divisive and antagonistic to the NPP. He clarified that his comments were based on historical reflections of the party’s journey and intended to provide constructive guidance to ensure the NPP remains competitive and regains power in the 2028 general elections under the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Wontumi Draws Lessons from NPP’s Past
The outspoken regional chairman referenced key moments in the NPP’s history, particularly the 1995–1998 internal primaries that shaped the party’s future. He highlighted how former President John Agyekum Kufuor secured 39% in the 1996 primaries and was again backed by delegates in 1998, eventually leading the party to power.
Drawing parallels with today’s political climate, Wontumi argued that Bawumia only needs about a 9% advantage in relative terms to strengthen his positioning ahead of the 2028 elections. According to him, his role as Ashanti Regional Chairman places him closer to grassroots members, who often share their views on the direction the party should take to reclaim victory.
Calls for Truth and Internal Unity
Wontumi stressed that his statements have always been transparent, truthful, and without any hidden agenda. He rejected suggestions that he misused party structures or invoked the name of the National Council inappropriately, insisting such claims misrepresent his intentions.
“It is unfortunate that Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong has allowed propaganda to twist my words,” Wontumi noted, adding that misinformation in the era of social media and artificial intelligence poses a serious risk to party unity and public trust.
Appeal for Constructive Engagement
Chairman Wontumi further advised the General Secretary to engage directly with party leaders for clarification before issuing public statements that may cause unnecessary divisions.
“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools like AI to distort messages, it would have been more appropriate for the General Secretary to reach out to me for clarity before making a public pronouncement that misrepresents the truth,” he emphasized.
Wontumi concluded by reaffirming his loyalty to the New Patriotic Party and his commitment to supporting Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid, urging all members to focus on truth, fairness, and unity as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.
