When Smoke Rises: A Personal Look at the Tema Industrial Area Fire

A few years ago, I stumbled into a situation I never saw coming — quite literally. I was on my way to meet a friend near an old warehouse when I saw this huge column of smoke twisting up into the sky like something out of a disaster movie. Sirens were blaring in the distance, and I remember standing there, frozen, phone in hand, trying to figure out whether I should record what I was seeing… or run.

That memory came flooding back this week when I heard about the fire that tore through multiple wooden structures at the Tema Industrial Area. If you’ve ever been around that part of town, you’ll know it’s not your typical “industrial” space with fancy tech and sterile offices. It’s gritty. It’s crowded. It’s full of hustle — workshops, carpentry sheds, small-scale factories, all stacked beside each other like a living, breathing puzzle of wood, sweat, and sparks. Literal sparks, apparently.

From what I gathered (and yeah, I did some scrolling through Twitter and a few local news clips), the fire broke out suddenly and spread like wildfire — no pun intended. Wooden structures, closely packed, dry air… it was like a matchstick waiting to be lit. No one's sure yet what started it — faulty wiring? Unattended machinery? Maybe just one bad decision on a hot day. But the aftermath is brutal.

Dozens of structures gone. Livelihoods, torched.

And that’s the part that really hits me. These aren’t just buildings. They’re someone’s small business. Someone’s dream. Someone’s way of feeding their family or putting a kid through school. I’ve seen how hard people in that area work — long hours, low pay, always pushing to make it through the month. Watching it all go up in flames feels like a punch to the gut.

What really gets me, though, is how easily something like this can be avoided. I mean, we say “fire safety” and everyone nods like they know what’s up, but how many of us actually take it seriously? Especially in places where people are just trying to survive, where there’s never quite enough money or time to fix that exposed wire or buy a proper extinguisher. It’s easy to talk about regulations, but it’s a lot harder when those regulations cost more than your rent.

Honestly, I don’t have the answers. Maybe more inspections? More training? A better emergency response? Probably all of the above. But I do think we need to start talking about prevention in a real way — not just when tragedy strikes.

And maybe, just maybe, we need to ask ourselves the harder questions: Why are so many businesses still operating in risky, flammable setups? Why do these fires keep happening in the same kinds of places, to the same kinds of people?

At the end of the day, it’s more than just structures burning. It’s trust. Stability. Hope.

So here’s what I’ve been sitting with: If a fire like this hit your neighborhood, your workplace, your daily grind — would you be ready? Would any of us?

Because when the smoke clears, someone still has to rebuild. And maybe, just maybe, we should make it easier for them to do it safely.
