BAWUMIA GRATEFUL FOR ENDORSEMENT BY SECTION OF NPP MPS
Former Vice President and
2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu
Bawumia, has expressed deep gratitude to a group of NPP Members of Parliament
who have publicly declared their support for his bid to lead the party into the
2028 general election.
Some MPs paid a courtesy
call on Dr Bawumia at his office in Accra on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to
officially throw their weight behind him. The meeting, according to Dr Bawumia,
was not only symbolic but also a powerful affirmation of internal party
support.
“It
was a visit from our Members of Parliament, and I think it was a very happy
visit,” Dr Bawumia told the media. “A courtesy call and a call to declare
support for me, and I’m so happy in terms of the group that have declared
support for me from Parliament—now amounting to over 60 members.”
Dr
Bawumia highlighted the significance of the endorsement, noting that the party
currently has 88 MPs, making the declaration a “strong show of support” from a
majority of sitting legislators.
“This
is a strong show of support and I thank them, and I thank God for this strong
show of support. Off we go,” he said.
He
stressed the importance of the MPs' backing, emphasising their strategic roles
within constituencies across the country. “The Members of Parliament, as you
know, control the constituencies to a very large extent, and I’m very happy for
what they have done today.”
With
the endorsement now public, Dr Bawumia used the occasion to rally the MPs to
shift gears into full campaign mode, urging them to begin mobilising support
and preparing the party for the journey ahead.
The
public show of unity and support comes as the NPP prepares for its presidential
primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, amid growing interest from other senior
party figures also expected to enter the race.
Dr Bawumia, who served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025 under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was elected as the party’s 2024 flagbearer and is widely expected to contest again, pending official confirmation from the party.
