Accra, June 18, 2025 â Over 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have publicly declared their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party into the 2028 presidential elections.
This show of support comes just months after the 2024 elections, where the NPP lost power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Despite the loss, many party members believe Dr. Bawumia is the right person to bring the NPP back to power in 2028.
Speaking to the media in Accra on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, the MPs said their decision to support Dr. Bawumia is based on his vision, loyalty, and leadership qualities. According to them, the Vice President has remained calm, focused, and dedicated even after the partyâs defeat.
Many of the MPs praised Dr. Bawumiaâs performance as Vice President, especially in the areas of digital innovation, economic reforms, and inclusive governance. They said his ability to connect with both the grassroots and the elite makes him the best choice for the party.
Dr. Bawumia has not yet officially declared his intention to contest in the partyâs upcoming flagbearer race. However, many believe that with such overwhelming support from MPs, a formal announcement may come soon.
Political analysts say the early backing from the lawmakers gives Dr. Bawumia a strong head start over other potential candidates. The NPP is expected to open nominations for the 2028 flagbearer race in 2026.
As the party begins to rebuild after its electoral loss, the focus is now shifting to who can best carry the NPPâs message forward. For now, it appears that a majority of its MPs believe that person is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
