Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko is not happy with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) latest decision—and he’s making it known. In a bold and strongly-worded statement, Agyarko has called the party’s move to elect a flagbearer before grassroots executives “total nonsense” and warned that it could lead to disaster.
The NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) recently announced that the party will elect its flagbearer on January 31, 2026. But instead of first choosing the polling station, constituency, and regional executives, the party has decided to pick its presidential candidate first. Agyarko believes this is a terrible mistake. According to him, choosing a leader before choosing the people who will work with that leader on the ground is like putting the roof on a house before building the walls and foundation.
In a passionate explanation, Agyarko said this move could cause serious confusion and conflict within the party. He believes the decision could even lead to the collapse of the NPP’s structure if not changed. “This is strategic suicide,” he said, warning that the grassroots are the lifeblood of the party, and sidelining them is dangerous.
He gave a powerful example to prove his point. Ghana has over 88,000 towns and villages. A presidential candidate, working alone, would take 10 years to visit all of them. But with over 200,000 party executives working together, the entire country could be covered in just two weeks. That’s why, in his view, strong grassroots structures must be in place before choosing a flagbearer.
Meanwhile, the NPP leadership says the early flagbearer election is meant to give the chosen candidate more time to prepare and build momentum for the 2028 general election. But Agyarko isn’t buying it. He insists that without the full party structure behind the flagbearer, no amount of time will make the campaign effective.
He is now calling on the party to reverse this decision immediately. He believes that the right thing to do is to first elect all party executives from the grassroots to the national level, and then choose a flagbearer who will work with them.
Boakye Agyarko’s message is clear: “Fix the foundation before choosing the leader.” Will the NPP listen?
