2025 Hajj: Task Force Discloses Why Six Ghanaians Died in Mecca

The 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca has brought both spiritual joy and sad news. The Ghana Hajj Task Force has confirmed that six Ghanaian pilgrims died during this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on June 17, 2025, the Medical Director of the Ghana Hajj Board, Dr. Ibrahim Zakaria, explained the cause of death.

“The pilgrims died mainly due to heatstroke, fatigue, and health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes,” he said. “The heat in Mecca went above 44°C, and that made it very hard for elderly pilgrims.”

This year’s Hajj attracted over 1.8 million people. With such a large crowd, safety and health are major concerns. Keywords like "2025 Hajj deaths," "Ghana Hajj fatalities," "Hajj heatstroke," and "Mecca pilgrimage news" are now trending online.

The Ghanaian pilgrims who passed away were all aged over 60 and had underlying health issues. “We urge all future pilgrims to do proper health checks before they travel,

” Dr. Zakaria added. “Also, people should listen to advice about resting, drinking enough water, and avoiding the sun in the afternoon.”

In 2024, four Ghanaian pilgrims died during Hajj. This year, the number has sadly increased. Officials say more awareness is needed. The Ghana Hajj Board says it will improve medical screening and education for future Hajj pilgrims.

Medical teams were placed at all major sites—Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah—where most of the Hajj rituals happen. Emergency services helped many people, but some cases were too serious to save.

Many Ghanaians have shared prayers and messages of sympathy online. One Facebook user wrote, “May Allah grant them Jannah and protect all pilgrims. Ameen.”

The Hajj is a holy journey, but it must be done with care and preparation. As Hajj 2025 ends, the Ghana Hajj Board promises to learn from this year and make the 2026 Hajj safer for everyone. Pilgrims are reminded: faith, health, and safety must go together.
