Florian Wirtz is set to have his Liverpool medical soon, as his jaw-dropping £116 million (that’s about $159 million) transfer to Anfield nears completion.

So, here’s the scoop: Liverpool has struck an incredible deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Wirtz, wrapping up one of the summer’s biggest transfer dramas. The breakdown? A cool £100 million upfront, plus an extra £16 million in potential add-ons. This is a record spend for the club and could even smash the British transfer record if all those bonuses hit. While Bayern Munich had been keeping a close eye on Wirtz for a while, he made it clear that Merseyside was where he wanted to be. If all the add-ons come through, we’ll be looking at a new British transfer record. And even that base fee of £100 million blows Liverpool's previous record out of the water, which was set when they brought Darwin Nunez over from Benfica.

Wirtz, who helped Leverkusen clinch the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal double in 2024, is ready to take the plunge and make his first move outside Germany. It looks like he’ll be signing a five-year contract as soon as he arrives at Anfield. Bayer Leverkusen initially held out for €150 million (around £128 million or $174 million), but Liverpool stood their ground, and eventually, a deal was struck. With Wirtz’s contract at Die Werkself lasting until 2027, the Reds wanted to wrap this up quickly, aiming to get him in before pre-season kicks off.

Liverpool is keen to get Wirtz settled into Arne Slot’s plans pretty fast. Expect to see him playing a big role in their pre-season tour. The team is looking to hit the ground running for the 2025-26 season as they aim to defend their Premier League title and improve on their performance in other competitions compared to last season.

Oh, and just a quick note: Wirtz is known for his spontaneous brilliance on the pitch. It’s one of those things that leave fans and fellow players in awe. In an interview with Werkself Magazin back in 2024, he mentioned, “What I do is mostly very spontaneous because it appears to be the best solution in that situation.” But he added that sometimes he can read the opponent’s moves, which makes it easier for him to pull off his tricks.

In other transfer news, Chelsea is reportedly eyeing up 6ft6 German striker Nick Woltemade. Plus, Jhon Duran is catching the interest of several Premier League clubs, with West Ham, Fulham, and Wolves all looking to bring him back to England. It’s shaping up to be a busy transfer window, for sure!
