As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its highly anticipated flagbearer race, Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture and a leading figure within the party, has called for unity and a renewed sense of purpose among party members. His appeal comes at a critical juncture, with various factions within the NPP beginning to rally behind their preferred candidates for the 2026 general elections.
Speaking at a regional party meeting in the Eastern Region over the weekend, Acheampong emphasized the importance of cohesion within the party as it prepares to elect a new leader. โWe cannot afford to be divided at this point. The strength of the NPP has always been our unity in diversity,โ he remarked. โAs we approach the flagbearership contest, let us engage in healthy competition, not internal strife.โ
Acheampongโs call is seen by many political analysts as timely and strategic. The NPP, having completed two consecutive terms in office under President Nana Akufo-Addo, is keen on retaining power in the upcoming election. However, internal wrangling and factionalism have the potential to undermine this goal if not carefully managed.
He urged party faithful to place the interest of the NPP above personal or factional ambitions, stressing that the ultimate objective must be victory in the 2026 polls. โThe Ghanaian people are watching us. If we project disunity, we weaken our own chances. We must rise above individual interests and work towards a common vision,โ Acheampong stated.
While Acheampong has not formally declared his intention to contest the flagbearer position, his increasing visibility and recent statements have fueled speculation about his ambitions. Regardless of his personal political trajectory, his emphasis on party unity resonates strongly within the rank and file of the NPP.
He concluded his speech with a call to action for grassroots mobilization, urging local party executives and supporters to continue working tirelessly in their communities. โOur success starts at the grassroots. Letโs organize, listen to our people, and keep the NPP vibrant and responsive.โ
As the party begins its internal processes leading to the selection of its next presidential candidate, Acheampongโs message serves as a rallying cry for unity, discipline, and focusโqualities the NPP will need to stay competitive in Ghanaโs evolving political landscape.
