Weep for this unholy place of violence, destruction, pain, anguish, and
despair! Where peace seems to have been sold in an exchange for generations of
hatred, vengeance and despise among acclaimed religious people. In this land of
suffering, unborn babies appear to have a foresight of their enemies.
The Gaza Strip is located on the Mediterranean Sea along the eastern coast;
the land has borders with Israel and Egypt to the east and southwest,
respectively. At its west, the
Mediterranean Sea shoreline forms the border of the 25-mile land of the Gaza
land, which is approximately 12 kilometres wide. Author Ilan Pappe in his recent
publication called this place “The biggest prison on earth”.
The author refers to the security infrastructure and the tough administrative mechanisms put in place to control the population of about one million Palestinians that call the Gaza Strip “home”. Author S. T. Kimbrough, on the other hand, draws word-pictures of the horrors and inhumane activities taking place in Gaza. The author through poems invites the world to witness the result of long-term injustice and unfair conflicts, savagery and destruction in "The Gaza Prison". It’s an advocacy call for peace in Gaza and environs.
One may
ask, has the Gaza Strip ever been a peaceful place to live in?
Yes, it has! History has it that only in three major periods has this piece of land experienced a type of peace! Firstly, between 1920 and early 1930, a time popularly known as the Pre-1948 (Ottoman & British Mandate period). Secondly, between 1994 and 2000 known as the Post Oslo-Accords as well as between 2005 and 2006, when Israel withdrew their troops briefly.
Taking advantage of personal experiences
and testimonies Author Laurence Anderson, in the book “the Israeli Palestinian
conflict simplified” emphasizes the grand story of two nations entwined in a
heartbreaking conflict. This book gives a breakdown of how geography, religious
beliefs, politics and global powers such as the US, European Union, Russia influences
the lives in both states. The book is a great introduction to Middle Eastern
history for those who are new to it.
Watch out for the Part 2: President Trump’s Coastal Paradise Plan for Gaza!
