Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United after his loan move to Chelsea ends. Despite a loan-to-buy obligation of £25 million, Chelsea has chosen not to honor that agreement and will instead pay a £5 million penalty fee attached to the deal.

According to multiple reports from journalists like Fabrizio Romano and Plettigold, Sancho was asked by the Chelsea board to take a significant pay cut to remain at the club. He currently has one year left on his contract with Manchester United and is earning about £250,000 per week — a figure that doesn’t fit into Chelsea’s incentive-based wage structure, where players are expected to prove themselves before earning a significant salary increase. In other words, a player must perform well before earning a contract extension with a raise.

However, Sancho is not a fan of this wage model. Despite describing his move away from Manchester United as “freedom” in an Instagram comment under a post by his colleague Marcus Rashford, he is now expected to return to Old Trafford. This is despite having contributed to Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League win with a goal and helping them qualify for the Champions League. Upon his return, Sancho is expected to assess all options, as United are reportedly not planning to reintegrate him into the squad. The club would also prefer to make his departure permanent, especially since he has only one year left on his contract and could leave for free. The relationship between both parties remains fractured.

Recall that Sancho was sent on loan to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, after falling out with former United coach Erik ten Hag. He also deleted all photos of himself in a Manchester United shirt, which sparked outrage among fans. Moreover, his comments likening his departure from the club to gaining “freedom” — indirectly or directly suggesting United felt like a prison — did not sit well with the fanbase. Therefore, even if Sancho and United reconsider and decide to play him, only God knows how the fans at Old Trafford will react.
