Rayan Cherki is set to leave Olympique Lyon this summer. The midfielder announced his departure in the mixed zone after Lyon's 2-0 win against Angers in their last match of the season.

“It was my last game, I think with Lyon. I am ready to try a new chapter in my career. Thanks to OL, the coach, the staff, the president, my teammates, and everyone at the club,” he said.

Recall that Lyon might face relegation due to a financial crisis, which could force the FA to demote them. This situation has made the club open to selling key players in order to clear their debts.

Cherki renewed his contract with Lyon to enable the club to sell him rather than lose him on a free transfer. The money from his sale could help stabilize his boyhood club financially.

He joined Lyon’s academy at the age of 7, progressing through the ranks before making his senior debut in 2019.

It was already known that Cherki might leave Lyon this season, especially after they missed out on reaching the Europa League final. The financial rewards from the final night could have significantly helped the club.

Cherki is reportedly on the radar of many top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, who are in dire need of reinforcements. This season, Cherki has made 44 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 20 assists in all competitions.

In Ligue 1 alone, he has made 30 appearances, scoring 8 goals and delivering 11 assists.

He also contributed 4 goals and 8 assists in 12 Europa League appearances, helping the club reach the Round of 16, where they were unfortunately eliminated by Manchester United.

Cherki is widely known for his dribbling skills. He earned the award for the best dribbler in the league, which was presented to him by one of football’s all-time greats, Eden Hazard.

Lyon is reportedly prepared to sell him for around £30–£40 million this summer.

Wherever Cherki goes, I’m sure he will shine. However, I personally hope he joins Manchester United—a real possibility if we win the Europa League.
