The recent video of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board and Director of Communications for the rulling National Democratic Congress (NDC), distributing dollars to Nana Agradaa has sparked intense public debate. While some are calling for Gyamfi's removal or suspension, others are coming to his defense, arguing that his actions were private and mere acts of benevolent; and did not go against any laws in Ghana.

The controversy began when Gyamfi was captured on video handing over US dollar notes to Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess. The video sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning Gyamfi's judgment and calling for him to be held accountable. However, it's essential to consider the context and motivations behind Gyamfi's actions before passing judgment.

According to  Hon Isaac Adongo, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Gyamfi's actions were a misstep, but not a crime. Adongo argues that Gyamfi's significant contributions to the party and the nation should be taken into account, and that he should not be punished for a single error. Adongo's defense of Gyamfi highlights the importance of considering the whole picture, rather than focusing on a single incident.

From a technical standpoint, Gyamfi's act of giving dollars to Nana Agradaa may not be against any laws in Ghana. The laws cited by critics, such as the Foreign Exchange Act and the Currency Act, primarily target business transactions and foreign exchange dealings. Gyamfi's gesture, on the other hand, was a one-time act of kindness, not part of a business transaction or systematic foreign exchange activity.

It's also worth noting that Gyamfi has apologized for any unintended consequences of his actions. This apology demonstrates his willingness to take responsibility for his mistakes and learn from them. Rather than punishing Gyamfi, it's essential to focus on supporting emerging leaders like him, who have made significant contributions to the party and the nation.

The calls for Gyamfi's removal or suspension seem to be driven more by politics than a genuine concern for accountability. As Isaac Adongo pointed out, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) might seize upon such incidents to target prominent NDC figures. This politicization of the issue undermines the credibility of the criticism and highlights the need for a more nuanced approach.

In conclusion, Sammy Gyamfi's actions, while regrettable, do not warrant severe punishment. His contributions to the party and the nation, combined with his apology and willingness to learn from his mistakes, demonstrate that he is a valuable asset to the NDC. Rather than throwing out the baby with the bathwater, it's essential to support emerging leaders like Gyamfi and focus on promoting accountability and transparency in governance.

Ultimately, Sammy Gyamfi's dollar gift to Nana Agradaa serves as a cautionary tale for all National Democratic Congress (NDC) appointees. While Gyamfi's intentions may have been benevolent, his actions have sparked intense public debate and criticism. As public officials, it's essential to exercise caution and consider the potential implications of their actions. NDC appointees would do well to heed this lesson and avoid similar acts that may bring unnecessary scrutiny and controversy, ensuring that their focus remains on serving the people of Ghana with integrity and transparency.
