As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to face waves of internal crisis and high-profile defections, the party’s governors have called for a crucial meeting in Abuja today (Sunday). This isn’t your regular political gathering — it's a serious sit-down that includes former governors, members of the Board of Trustees, and past National Assembly leaders.

An insider told Sunday PUNCH that this expanded meeting is expected to be tense and emotional, as the party seeks to get its house in order ahead of the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the national convention.

Since the 2023 elections, the PDP has been struggling to maintain stability. From the unresolved National Secretary position to the fallout between Rivers Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, things have only gotten messier. Multiple efforts by the party's leadership bodies to fix the chaos have led to even more fractures.

To make matters worse, some key figures have jumped ship to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa. Several lawmakers, especially from Kebbi State, have also defected after meeting with President Tinubu — prompting accusations that the presidency is scheming to create a one-party state.

Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Emmanuel Agbo, confirmed the Sunday meeting, saying it’s meant to secure support from former governors and leaders for decisions made during the last PDP governors’ gathering in Ibadan. It’s part of the lead-up to the August convention.

PDP’s spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, struck a hopeful tone, saying the party will emerge stronger. Meanwhile, Acting Chairman Umar Damagum didn’t mince words, calling defectors people "without conscience" and insisting they’ll soon leave the APC too.

Others, like Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, see the defections as evidence of Nigeria’s weak party ideologies. Still, top members believe the NEC meeting on May 27 could be the turning point the PDP needs to regroup and reposition itself ahead of 2027.
