Inter Miami CF ended their three-game losing streak in all competitions with an emphatic 4–1 victory over the New York Red Bulls at Chase Stadium on Saturday night. The win marked a crucial return to form for the team and added another milestone to Lionel Messi’s legendary career.
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Messi’s goal in the 67th minute brought his career tally to an astounding 859 goals. In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Romano wrote, “Leo Messi scores for Inter Miami, now reaching 63 goals/assists in 53 games for the MLS side. 859 career goals so far.”
Inter Miami started strong with Fafa Picault, who was rested during their recent Concacaf Champions Cup loss to Vancouver, opening the scoring with a well-placed volley in the 9th minute. Defender Marcelo Weigandt doubled the lead in the 33rd minute following a lengthy VAR review. Star forward Luis Suárez extended the advantage with his third goal of the season in the 39th minute, giving Miami a comfortable lead.
The Red Bulls managed to respond before halftime, narrowing the scoreline to 3–1 through a 43rd-minute header by Mohammed Sofo, who capitalized on a deep corner delivery. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the second half when Messi delivered a stunning volley in the 67th minute, sealing the win.
With this result, Inter Miami now sits on 21 points from 10 games and has only suffered one loss in the current MLS season.
Speaking after the match, Miami head coach Javier Mascherano acknowledged the importance of the win, especially after recent setbacks. “It was a very physically demanding game – we needed it,” Mascherano stated. “In the first half, we were clinical in front of goal, which was missing before. In the second, we focused more on possession and avoided being too direct. We didn’t want to give the Red Bulls momentum after they scored.”
The win was not only a boost in points but also a much-needed morale lift for the squad.
