The Students' Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has distanced itself from recent accusations made by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Olusola Oladoja, against the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, and the institution’s Governing Council.
In a formal letter to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, dated Saturday, FUOYE SUG President Olorunsola Abiodun and Secretary General Ife Lateef rejected the contents of the petition submitted by the NANS president, describing it as a distortion of facts.
Oladoja’s petition, titled “Petition on the crisis at FUOYE” and dated May 2, had accused the university management of misconduct and called for the removal of both the VC and the Council Chairman, Senator Victor Udoma-Egba. It also demanded the formation of a neutral panel to revisit all allegations within 72 hours.
However, the SUG leadership strongly condemned the petition, stating that it misrepresented the views of FUOYE students. They argued that the petition was a calculated effort to discredit the current administration and halt the progress being made at the university.
“As student leaders devoted to truth and the welfare of our peers, we cannot allow misinformation to damage the reputation of our institution,” the SUG stated. They urged the minister to ignore the petition, emphasizing it lacked credibility and failed to reflect the students’ position.
The SUG also reaffirmed its recognition as the legitimate voice of FUOYE students and urged the minister to uphold the conclusions reached by the university’s Governing Council after internal investigations.
They clarified that the sexual harassment claims involving Folashade Adebayo and the VC had been investigated and dismissed by both police authorities and the university. Furthermore, they refuted claims of staff promotions being tied to misconduct.
Regarding the death of a student named Modupe, the SUG cautioned against politicizing the tragedy, asserting that investigations found no administrative wrongdoing.
They concluded by praising Prof. Fasina for improvements in academics, infrastructure, and student welfare, stressing that no credible evidence of financial misconduct had been found under his leadership.
