Former Signals Bureau Chief Adu-Boahen Remanded by High Court

The High Court in Accra has ordered the remand of former National Signals Bureau boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahen, into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Organisation (EOCO) for a period of seven days. The ruling, delivered on Friday, May 2, 2025, came after a request by the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, who raised serious concerns over interference in the ongoing legal process.

According to Dr Ayine, fresh intelligence suggested that Mr Adu-Boahen had attempted to obstruct justice by influencing a key prosecution witness in a case involving alleged theft. While details of the evidence remain confidential, the Attorney General’s statement was considered compelling enough for the judge to call for an in-camera review of the material before arriving at a final decision.

On the other hand, the defence counsel, Hon Samuel Atta Akyea, challenged the basis of the prosecution’s claims. He questioned the credibility of the intelligence provided, strongly arguing that his client lacked both the opportunity and means to interfere with the witness. Mr Atta Akyea called on the court to consider the rights of the accused and urged caution before curtailing his liberties based on unverified intelligence.

After a lengthy hearing and review of the available documents, the court decided that remanding Mr Adu-Boahen was a necessary step to ensure an uninterrupted legal process. The judge emphasised that the remand would help create room for the state to finalise its witness statements and prepare adequately for trial without external interference. It was deemed a reasonable balance between upholding justice and respecting the rights of the accused.

While Adu-Boahen remains in custody, his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, and a former bank relations officer, Mildred Donkor—both of whom are co-accused in the case—have been granted bail. The details of the bail conditions were not publicly disclosed, but it was confirmed that they would not be joining Mr Adu-Boahen in EOCO custody.

In a striking development during the proceedings, Dr Ayine also revealed that additional investigations involving Mr Adu-Boahen are being conducted at Ghana Water Limited. Though no formal charges have been laid in that regard, the disclosure points to the possibility of further legal scrutiny in the coming weeks, potentially widening the scope of the case beyond the initial allegations.

Mr Adu-Boahen is expected to make his next court appearance on Friday, May 9, 2025, when the state is likely to present more concrete evidence and possibly new charges, depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations. For now, all eyes remain on the EOCO and the judicial process as the country observes how this high-profile case unfolds.
