The recent dramatic rescue of Ama Serwaa Konadu, a well-known hairdresser and event decorator in Asiakwa, Eastern Region, has sparked a wave of commendation and community reflection in Abuakwa South. The Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, publicly lauded Ghana's security services for their rapid and coordinated operation, which ensured the safe return of the 39-year-old woman after her harrowing ordeal.
Ama Serwaa was allegedly abducted on Tuesday, April 22, by unknown individuals after leaving home for work. Shockingly, just a day later, her captors released disturbing videos to her family using her phone. In one of the clips, the woman was being assaulted with a machete while nude, sparking panic among loved ones and the wider community. The assailants claimed to be holding her in Nigeria and demanded a ransom of GH₵500,000 for her release.
The family, alarmed by the situation, wasted no time in involving the Ghana Police Service and other intelligence agencies, submitting the videos as crucial evidence to aid investigations. What followed was a swift, well-coordinated rescue operation by Ghana’s security forces, including the National Security outfit, working collaboratively behind the scenes to ensure a safe recovery.
Following the successful mission, Dr Agyemang expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “Your assurances to me, tireless dedication, and tactical excellence in tracking and rescuing the victim are commendable and truly deserving.” His appreciation extended to Proudly Asiakwan, a local community support group that stood by the victim's family throughout the tense situation.
Beyond the praise, the MP used the moment to deliver a strong message on community vigilance. He urged all residents to be proactive in safeguarding their neighbourhoods and emphasised that such terrifying incidents serve as reminders of the hidden dangers that could arise at any moment. He specifically called on parents and guardians to remain highly alert to prevent any future misfortunes.
Ama Serwaa is currently safe and receiving proper care following her rescue. However, the trauma of the experience remains a reminder of the growing need for enhanced local security infrastructure. Dr Agyemang reaffirmed his commitment to this cause, promising to deepen collaboration with stakeholders and security forces to prevent similar cases in the future. “We must continue working together to build a safer and more secure community for all,” he added with conviction.
The case has stirred emotion not just in the Eastern Region, but across the nation, with many expressing relief at the victim’s return. It also serves as a timely wake-up call on the realities of kidnapping and cybercrime in the region, issues that demand stronger societal attention and government intervention.
Though justice is yet to be served in terms of arresting the culprits, the coordinated success of this operation stands as a proud example of what effective collaboration between security agencies and community members can achieve. As Ghana continues to grapple with new forms of crime, the lessons from this rescue effort will undoubtedly play a role in shaping future response strategies
