President-elect John Dramani Mahama has officially instructed the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament to put forward Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the party's nominee for the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. This move was made after careful consultation with the NDC’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership. The goal is to tap into Bagbin’s wealth of experience in Parliament to help strengthen the legislative arm of government. Mahama’s decision comes as part of the NDC’s strategy to ensure effective governance during this important phase of the country’s political journey.

Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin has had a long and distinguished career in Ghana’s Parliament, holding various significant positions over the years. He has served as both the Minority Leader and Majority Leader and most recently as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament. Throughout his tenure, Bagbin has earned a reputation for his dedication to improving parliamentary processes, fostering legislative development, and ensuring that the democratic practices of Ghana are upheld. His leadership style has been characterized by an unwavering commitment to ensuring fairness, transparency, and the effective operation of Parliament.

If confirmed by Parliament, Alban Bagbin will make history by becoming the first Speaker of the Fourth Republic to be reappointed for a second consecutive term since 2020. His re-election would mark a significant milestone, as he would be only the second Speaker to retain his position in the history of Ghana's 4th Republic. Mahama has expressed his full confidence in Bagbin’s leadership, emphasizing that the Speaker's extensive parliamentary experience will be crucial in ensuring that Parliament fulfills its duties of oversight and legislative functions with efficiency and impartiality.
