Youth Petition for Destoolment of Kwahumanhene
In October 2024, the Concerned Youth of Kwahu formally petitioned the Kwahu Traditional Council to begin destoolment proceedings against Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, the Kwahumanhene. This petition follows serious allegations of extortion and fraud that led to his resignation as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).
The controversy erupted when reports surfaced accusing Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II of misusing his influential position at ADB. According to the youth group, the alleged misconduct damaged not only the bank's reputation but also tarnished the image of the Kwahu Traditional Area. These allegations sparked outrage, prompting the Concerned Youth of Kwahu to demand accountability.
The petition highlights concerns over the integrity and moral standing required of a traditional leader. The youth argue that a chief accused of such serious ethical violations cannot continue to serve as the custodian of Kwahu heritage and values. “Our traditions are built on honesty and trust,” one spokesperson for the youth group said. “We cannot allow these values to be compromised.”
Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, who has held the position of Kwahumanhene since 2010, has denied all allegations. In a statement, he described the accusations as a coordinated attempt to undermine his leadership. Supporters of the chief believe this is a politically motivated effort to discredit him, especially given his recent involvement in regional development projects.
The Kwahu Traditional Council has acknowledged receipt of the petition and has promised to conduct a fair and thorough investigation. The council emphasized the need for calm while due process is followed, stating, “We will ensure that justice is served in a manner that respects our customs and traditions.”
The youth have expressed their readiness to provide evidence to support their claims. They believe the destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II will restore the honor and credibility of the Kwahu chieftaincy. However, some elders and traditionalists worry that such a move could create division within the community.
As tensions rise, many Kwahu citizens are eagerly awaiting the council’s decision. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how allegations of misconduct are handled within Ghana's traditional leadership system.
What are your thoughts on this developing story? Do you believe the allegations warrant destoolment, or is this an attempt to destabilize traditional authority?
