Central Region: Cooperative Sector Shows Significant Growth at Annual General Meeting
The Ghana Co-operative Council's Annual General Meeting (AGM), held in the Central Region, brought encouraging news for the region's cooperative sector. The meeting highlighted notable growth and progress, reflecting an increase in membership, productivity, and economic contributions.
In his address, the Chairman of the Ghana Co-operative Council acknowledged the pivotal role cooperatives play in local development. He emphasized that cooperatives are not just business ventures but are vital tools for promoting collective prosperity, especially in rural communities. According to the Council's report, membership within the cooperative movement in the Central Region has surged by 15% over the past year. This growth signifies renewed confidence in cooperative societies as a means to enhance livelihoods.
The report further outlined improvements in various cooperative sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, and retail. Agricultural cooperatives, in particular, saw remarkable gains in production and access to markets due to better collaboration and knowledge sharing. Notably, cocoa and maize producers benefited from cooperative-driven initiatives that improved productivity through the adoption of modern farming techniques.
The AGM also addressed challenges faced by the cooperative movement, such as limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, and the need for continuous education on cooperative principles. Nevertheless, efforts to overcome these hurdles through partnerships with local financial institutions and government support were discussed and welcomed by participants.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was a commitment to expanding financial literacy programs to help cooperative members better manage their finances and investments. There was also a strong emphasis on the need to attract younger generations to join and sustain the cooperative movement for future growth.
The Central Regional Minister, who attended the event as a guest speaker, praised the achievements of the cooperative sector. He called for sustained government support to enable cooperatives to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the region's socio-economic development. He also encouraged cooperative members to stay united and innovative in their operations.
The AGM concluded with a sense of optimism, with leaders pledging to work harder to strengthen the sector. Cooperative members expressed satisfaction with the Council’s progress and shared their hopes for a brighter economic future driven by collective effort and mutual support.
