Kwesi Appiah Reflects on Sudan's Struggles and Triumphs Amid Civil Unrest

Sudan's head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has shed light on the trials his team faced while playing home matches at neutral venues due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Since April 2023, the country has been plagued by violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, resulting in widespread instability. This turmoil forced the Falcons of Jediane to relocate their home games during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Speaking about these challenges, Appiah revealed how he encouraged his players to treat these alternative venues as their home ground, instilling a strong sense of resilience and determination.

The United Nations has labeled Sudan's crisis as one of violence, hunger, and displacement, with nearly 25 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Against this backdrop, Appiah acknowledged the emotional toll the situation has taken on the players but also praised their commitment to the game. “It has been difficult, but I urged my players to adapt to the circumstances. Their willingness to step into different roles and embrace the challenge has been inspiring,” he remarked in an interview. This mindset became a key motivator, enabling the team to stay focused and work towards their goals despite being uprooted from their home soil.

Appiah's efforts have borne fruit, as he successfully led Sudan to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, set to be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. While Sudan’s last AFCON title dates back to 1970, this qualification marks a significant achievement for the nation, symbolizing hope amid hardship. With the tournament on the horizon, Appiah remains optimistic about his team’s potential to exceed expectations and bring pride to a country yearning for moments of unity and trial Kwesi Appiah Reflects on Sudan's Struggles and Triumphs Amid Civil Unrest
