Kwesi Appiah, the current head coach of Sudan's national football team, has vowed to support Ghana’s Black Stars in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This commitment comes on the heels of a disappointing campaign that saw Ghana fail to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years. The Black Stars ended at the bottom of Group F, earning just three points from six matches, with three losses and three draws. Appiah, a former Ghana coach and now a Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, expressed his determination to help the team bounce back. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, he noted that the players have the potential to excel and pledged to provide any form of assistance required to ensure the team’s success. According to Appiah, “It is about Ghana and not anybody.”
Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign, however, shows promise. The Black Stars are currently second in Group I, tied with Comoros at nine points. They still have crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, which will be pivotal in determining their fate. Appiah’s involvement, although unofficial, reflects his passion for Ghanaian football and his desire to see the team thrive on the global stage. His extensive experience and knowledge of the team could be an asset as they aim to recover from their recent setbacks. Despite his responsibilities with Sudan, Appiah remains committed to offering his expertise and insights to help Ghana secure a place in the prestigious tournament.
While supporting Ghana, Kwesi Appiah has been leading Sudan to impressive results. Under his guidance, Sudan tops Group B of the World Cup qualifiers, with 10 points from four matches. This success has further cemented Appiah’s reputation as a capable and experienced coach. However, he has ruled out any possibility of returning as Ghana's head coach, choosing instead to focus on his role with Sudan while providing moral and advisory support to the Black Stars. His dual commitment highlights his dedication to African football as a whole. With Ghana's next challenges looming and their qualification hopes still alive, Appiah’s willingness to lend his support could play a vital role in reigniting the team's drive for success.
