Adams Abdul-Salam, the Member of Parliament for New Edubiase, has vowed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, led by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, will prioritize the Black Stars' qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Abdul-Salam acknowledged the challenges currently facing Ghana’s national football team, including their recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite these setbacks, he assured the public that the incoming government would work closely with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to provide the necessary support and logistics to ensure the team achieves World Cup qualification. The MP emphasized that this objective is central to the NDC's plans for sports development in Ghana.
The Black Stars, currently second in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers, are tied with Comoros on nine points and are preparing for crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025. Abdul-Salam expressed confidence that the NDC government’s support would help the team overcome its recent struggles and regain its competitive edge on the international stage. He stressed that reviving the national team’s performance is a shared responsibility between the government and the GFA, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving this goal. This renewed focus on football is part of a broader strategy to restore the pride and success associated with Ghanaian sports.
In addition to focusing on the Black Stars, Abdul-Salam reiterated the NDC’s commitment to completing the New Edubiase Sports Stadium, a project initiated during a previous NDC administration but left unfinished under the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The MP described the stadium’s completion as a key campaign promise that will be fulfilled under Mahama's leadership. He criticized the NPP for neglecting the project, which he believes is vital for nurturing local talent and boosting sports development in the region. With the NDC now back in power, Abdul-Salam assured his constituents that the stadium and other sports-related initiatives would receive the attention they deserve. This commitment reflects the party’s broader vision of using sports as a tool for national development and community upliftment.
