Why Bawumia Conceded Early to Mahama in the 2024 Election

The 2024 Ghanaian presidential election saw Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceding defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama earlier than anticipated. This swift concession reflected the undeniable numbers favoring Mahama, marked by regional shifts and low voter turnout in key NPP strongholds.

Swing Regions Deliver for Mahama

Swing regions like Central, Western, and Greater Accra played a decisive role in Mahama’s victory:

  • Central Region: Traditionally a bellwether, Mahama outperformed expectations, capturing a majority of constituencies.
  • Western Region: Mahama flipped key constituencies, earning over 52% of the vote.
  • Greater Accra: The largest voting bloc showed overwhelming support for Mahama, with about 55% of the vote, reflecting the NDC’s effective urban strategy.

NDC’s Strongholds Remained Unshaken

Mahama’s base in the Volta, Oti, and Upper East Regions delivered staggering margins:

  • Volta Region: Mahama secured over 85% of the vote, maintaining the NDC’s dominance.
  • Oti Region: Mahama commanded over 80% of votes, solidifying the region as an NDC stronghold.
  • Upper East: With approximately 70% of the vote vote. Mahama reinforced his appeal in the north.

NPP Strongholds Underperformed

Declining margins in NPP bastions were a significant setback for Bawumia:

  • Ashanti Region: While victorious, Bawumia’s reduced margin of 65% (compared to the usual 75%) was a critical blow.
  • Eastern Region: Bawumia garnered only 58%, reflecting Mahama’s growing appeal.
  • Bono Region: Mahama narrowed the gap, reducing Bawumia’s lead to under 55%.

Northern Gains for Mahama

Mahama’s focus on rural development resonated in the north, where he won over 60% in the Northern Region and a symbolic 45% in Bawumia’s North East backyard.

These factors made Mahama’s victory mathematically inevitable, prompting Bawumia’s early concession.

Mahama’s strong performance in his base regions, combined with gains in swing areas and declining margins in NPP strongholds, made his victory inevitable. By the time 80% of results were declared, Mahama led by over 900,000 votes, with marginal constituencies like Bono East and Western North swinging decisively in his favor. Bawumia’s early concession reflected his recognition of the electoral mathematics, demonstrating political maturity and respect for the will of the Ghanaian people. This election highlighted the importance of voter turnout and strategic campaigning.
