NEPWHAN Urges FG To Do More For People Living With HIV/AIDS

The Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) has called on the Federal Government to do more to support people living with HIV/AIDS in the country. The organization made the call in a statement issued to commemorate World AIDS Day, which is observed annually on December 1.

According to NEPWHAN, despite the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, there is still much to be done to support people living with the disease. The organization noted that many people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria still face stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare services.

"We urge the Federal Government to do more to support people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria," said NEPWHAN's National Coordinator, Abdulkadir Ibrahim. "This includes increasing funding for HIV/AIDS programs, improving access to healthcare services, and addressing the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS."

NEPWHAN also called on the government to implement policies that promote the rights and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS. This includes the provision of free antiretroviral therapy (ART) to all people living with HIV/AIDS, regardless of their income or social status.

The organization also commended the government for its efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS, particularly the establishment of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan.

However, NEPWHAN noted that despite these efforts, there are still significant challenges to be addressed. These include the low level of awareness about HIV/AIDS among the general population, the lack of access to healthcare services, particularly in rural areas, and the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS.

In conclusion, NEPWHAN's call on the Federal Government to do more to support people living with HIV/AIDS is a timely reminder of the need for sustained efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By increasing funding for HIV/AIDS programs, improving access to healthcare services, and addressing the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS, the government can help to ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria receive the support and care they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

As the world marks World AIDS Day, it is essential that we remember the millions of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world and recommit ourselves to the fight against this disease. By working together, we can create a world where people living with HIV/AIDS receive the support and care they need to thrive.
