Aziz Haruna Futa, a former management member of Hearts of Oak, has publicly called for the removal of Otto Addo as head coach of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, following their disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Futa’s criticism comes after the Black Stars failed to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament, finishing last in Group F with a mere three points. The team’s campaign was marked by three defeats and three draws, a performance that has raised doubts about Addo’s capabilities. Despite his initial contract being signed for one year with an option for a two-year extension, Addo’s tenure has been increasingly questioned due to the lackluster results.
In an interview with Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, Futa did not hold back, openly stating that he did not believe Otto Addo was the right coach for the national team. He added that even the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, had expressed concerns about Addo’s appointment in the first place. According to Futa, Ussif had cautioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA) against selecting Addo, suggesting that he lacked the skills necessary to lead the team to success, particularly in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Futa’s comments underscore the growing dissatisfaction with Addo's leadership, especially given the high expectations surrounding the Black Stars and their need for a qualified coach to guide them to international success.
With the AFCON qualifiers behind them, the Black Stars now shift their attention to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. They will face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, aiming to make a strong comeback and rebuild confidence in the team. This period offers an opportunity for reflection and improvement, as the team prepares for the next crucial step in their international journey. The pressure is on Addo to prove that he can lead the Black Stars to a more successful campaign, but for now, his future remains uncertain, as Futa and others question whether he can deliver the results that Ghana expects on the world stage.
