Mahama Proposes 24-Hour Economy in Kumasi

Former President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a 24-hour economy for Ghana, aiming to boost market operations and create more employment opportunities. During a recent visit to Kumasi, he highlighted this plan as a key component of his vision for Ghana's economic transformation.

Mahama explained that a 24-hour economy would allow businesses and markets to operate around the clock, ensuring better utilization of resources and facilities. This approach, he argued, could significantly increase productivity and income generation, particularly in bustling areas like Kumasi.

The former president emphasized the need for a strong workforce to support this initiative. "A 24-hour economy will create more jobs as businesses will need to employ additional staff to cover evening and night shifts," he noted. Mahama added that this strategy could also reduce unemployment, especially among the youth.

Key to this plan is ensuring safety and reliable infrastructure. Mahama proposed investments in public lighting, security systems, and transportation networks to make night operations viable and secure for both workers and customers. He also stressed the importance of reliable electricity to power businesses at all hours.

In his address, Mahama highlighted Kumasi’s central role in Ghana's economy. He described the city as a hub of trade and culture that could benefit immensely from a 24-hour economy. "Kumasi is vibrant, and this initiative will only make it more dynamic," he said.

Supporters of the idea see it as a forward-thinking approach to modernizing Ghana's economy. However, others have raised concerns about the potential challenges, including energy demands and safety issues. Despite these concerns, Mahama remains optimistic, believing that proper planning and collaboration can address such hurdles.

The 24-hour economy proposal forms part of Mahama’s broader vision for a resilient and inclusive economy. His visit to Kumasi is one of many engagements with Ghanaians as he seeks to reconnect with citizens and share his development plans.
