The Techiman Traditional Council has expressed its displeasure over an attack on the entourage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during his recent visit. The council issued a statement addressing the incident, describing it as "regrettable" and calling for calm and mutual respect among traditional authorities.
The incident, which occurred during a procession in Techiman, sparked outrage from various quarters, including the Ashanti Kingdom. Videos of the attack, widely shared on social media, show chaotic scenes with some individuals pelting the Asantehene’s convoy with objects, creating tension between the Techiman and Ashanti traditional areas.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, the Techiman Traditional Council apologized for the unfortunate event and clarified that the actions of the perpetrators do not represent the values or intentions of the people of Techiman. The council emphasized the need for unity, urging citizens not to inflame tensions through divisive rhetoric.
"We, the leaders of the Techiman Traditional Council, condemn this act in the strongest terms. Our traditions and customs emphasize respect for other traditional authorities, and this act does not reflect the hospitality of our people," the statement read.
The council pledged to cooperate with law enforcement to identify and prosecute the culprits. It also called on the general public to refrain from circulating inflammatory messages or videos that could escalate tensions further.
The Asantehene's visit to Techiman was part of a broader engagement to strengthen ties between traditional authorities in the Bono East Region and the Ashanti Kingdom. The attack has since overshadowed the purpose of the visit, with many calling for reconciliation between the two traditional councils.
Authorities have urged calm among the public, with the Techiman Traditional Council assuring the Asantehene and his subjects of their continued friendship and cooperation.
