Daniel Domelevo Accuses Government of Moving from Taxation to Robbery

Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has raised serious concerns about Ghana’s economic management, accusing the government of shifting from taxation to what he describes as “robbery.” Speaking at a recent public forum, Domelevo highlighted the excessive tax burden placed on Ghanaians and called for greater fiscal discipline to restore the country’s financial health.

According to Domelevo, the government’s reliance on heavy taxation is causing widespread hardship among citizens. He argued that while taxes are necessary for national development, the current tax system feels exploitative rather than fair. “Taxes are meant to develop the nation, but when it becomes unbearable, it turns into robbery,” Domelevo asserted.

Domelevo emphasized that the government should focus on better financial management instead of overtaxing citizens. He criticized wasteful spending and corruption, suggesting these are the root causes of the nation’s economic struggles. He also called for increased transparency in the use of public funds to ensure Ghanaians see value for their money.

The former Auditor-General urged policymakers to adopt stricter fiscal discipline, reduce borrowing, and manage resources more efficiently. He believes these measures would lessen the financial burden on citizens and pave the way for sustainable economic growth.

Domelevo’s comments come at a time when many Ghanaians are grappling with rising living costs. Public reaction to his statement has been mixed, with some agreeing that the tax system needs reform, while others argue that taxation is necessary for the government to meet its obligations.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the government will address Domelevo’s concerns or maintain its current approach to taxation.

What are your thoughts on Domelevo’s claims? Do you agree that the government is taxing citizens unfairly? Leave a comment below and share your opinion.
