John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led government of orchestrating a fake news operation designed to tarnish his reputation ahead of the 2024 general elections. Speaking during his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mahama made these remarks while visiting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on November 3.

Mahama alleged that the government is behind a systematic disinformation campaign aimed at undermining his credibility and sowing confusion among the electorate. He described the campaign as a deliberate effort to discredit his name as part of a broader strategy to weaken his chances in the upcoming polls.

In his address to the Asantehene, Mahama urged the traditional leader to disregard recent allegations accusing him of masterminding an attack on his convoy in Techiman. He dismissed such reports as baseless fabrications intended to create unnecessary discord and tension.

"The seat of government knows about the recent propagation of fake news," Mahama stated. "Because their campaign has failed, they have resorted to lying and spreading misinformation. But I know that God knows everyone’s heart, and just as He enstools kings, He will have mercy on us and enstool His king."

### Commitment to Peaceful Campaigns

Mahama reiterated his commitment to a peaceful and issue-based campaign, emphasizing the importance of credibility and transparency in the electoral process. He called on all stakeholders, including political parties, traditional authorities, and the media, to prioritize unity and the national interest over divisive tactics.

He expressed concern that the deliberate spread of fake news could undermine the democratic process, urging Ghanaians to remain vigilant and discerning. According to Mahama, such tactics are designed to distract voters from the pressing issues facing the nation, including economic hardship and rising unemployment.

"I have always believed in peaceful and transparent elections," Mahama said. "Our focus should be on addressing the real challenges affecting Ghanaians, not on engaging in smear campaigns. We must all work together to ensure that the upcoming elections are credible and peaceful."

### Allegations of Disinformation

The former president’s accusations come in the wake of a series of incidents that have drawn public attention. One such incident involved claims of an orchestrated attack on Mahama’s convoy in Techiman, a report he vehemently denied. Mahama urged the Asantehene to disregard these allegations, describing them as part of the government’s broader strategy to tarnish his image.

According to Mahama, the spread of such false information reflects a lack of confidence in the ruling party's ability to win the elections on the strength of its record. He suggested that the government’s focus on disinformation is a sign of desperation.

"The lies and fabrications are a clear indication that they have lost touch with the people," Mahama said. "Instead of addressing the issues that matter to Ghanaians, they are resorting to propaganda and fake news."

### A Call for Credibility

Mahama also used the opportunity to urge Ghanaians to reject divisive tactics and focus on the issues that matter most to the country. He called for an election process that is free from manipulation and interference, emphasizing the need for all parties to respect the will of the people.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the 2024 elections serve as a model for democratic governance in Africa. According to Mahama, credible elections are essential for fostering national unity and building public trust in the democratic process.

### Looking Ahead

As the December elections draw closer, Mahama’s accusations are likely to further intensify the political discourse in Ghana. His remarks underscore the growing concerns about the role of disinformation in the electoral process and its potential impact on voter perceptions.

Mahama’s call for peaceful and credible elections serves as a reminder of the critical importance of unity and integrity in the democratic process. With just days to go before the polls, the focus will be on ensuring that the elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the will of the people and upholds Ghana’s democratic values.

In the meantime, Mahama continues his campaign tour, engaging with voters across the country and advocating for policies aimed at addressing Ghana’s economic challenges and improving the lives of ordinary citizens. As the electoral race heats up, the former president’s commitment to peaceful campaigns and credible elections will likely resonate with many Ghanaians seeking stability and progress.
