Marc Guehi Defies FA Warning with 'Jesus Loves You' Message on Rainbow Armband
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi once again wrote a religious message on his rainbow captain's armband, disregarding warnings from the Football Association (FA). During Palace’s clash against Ipswich Town on Tuesday, the England international inscribed “Jesus loves you” on the armband, reigniting controversy over the intersection of personal beliefs and symbolic gestures in football.
The rainbow armbands are part of the Rainbow Laces campaign, which aims to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and promote inclusivity in sports. The FA had previously reminded players, including Guehi, that writing religious messages on kits or equipment is prohibited under its regulations.
This was not Guehi’s first defiance of the rule. During Palace’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United the previous weekend, he had written “I love Jesus” on his armband, a move that sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans commended his expression of faith, others criticized it for overshadowing the intended purpose of the rainbow armband.
Despite the controversy, Guehi played a pivotal role in Crystal Palace’s 1-0 victory over Ipswich, which marked their first away win of the season. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s decisive goal secured only their second league victory this campaign.
After the game, Palace manager Oliver Glasner addressed the ongoing debate surrounding Guehi’s actions. “Everyone now is about integration, no discrimination—and Marc as well,” Glasner told Amazon Prime via BBC Sport. “We are always against discrimination and any kind of abuse. Marc shares these views too.”
Interestingly, Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy also declined to wear the rainbow armband on Tuesday, citing his religious beliefs.
The Rainbow Laces campaign, which runs until December 5, aims to foster a sense of unity and respect for the LGBTQ+ community in football. Guehi’s actions, however, have highlighted the complex interplay between personal convictions and collective initiatives within the sport, sparking further discussions on the balance between individual freedom of expression and the shared goals of inclusivity campaigns.
